Omega Watch

The beginning of the Omega story goes back to 1848 when Louis Brandt started developing pocket watches in his workshop at La Chaux-de-Fonds. Then in 1877 Brandt forms Louis Brandt & Fils company with Louis Paul his eldest son. In 1880 Louis Paul and his brother Caeser move the company to Bienne, where it remains today. The Brandts were one of the first swiss watch makers to utilize the divided assembly line which bought down the price of watches greatly with the improved quality and efficiency to be gainned from mass production. 1891 the company became Louis Brandt & Frere, then in 1903 it became Louis Brandt and Frere - Omega Watch Co, then Omega, Louis Brandt & Frere in 1947 and finally just Omega Ltd in 1982.

The first mass produced watch by Omega was in 1894, the Omega 19 line caliber (pocket watch). 1902 saw Omega introduce its first wrist watch. Since then Omega has been blessed with being in the right place at the right time, and of course developing consitantly high quality watches. The 1960's saw Omega grab the title of the first watch worn on the moon, the Omega speedmaster was worn by Neil Armstrong and all apollo crews.

1974 saw Omega launch its first high frequency (2.4 Mhz) quart wrist watch, the Mega Quartz 2400. This revolutionary watch, with precision 10 times greater than a normal quartz watch, also has the enviable title of being the first ever watch to be awarded a Marine Chronometers Certificate (the 1511 version).

Omega continues to make a large range of high quality watches for both the ladies and the gentlemen. Omega has participated in its fair share of watch moments, please visit our which moments section of this website for more Omega moments.

Nowadays,Omega is very popular in the whole world,at the same time, you can also choose the Rolex replica watches,Richard Mille replicas,Porsche Design replica watches,Zenith replicas and Chopard replicas.

Watches Buying Guide-Evaluate Watch Features

When shopping for watches, determine if they come with the extra features you may want.
· Watches with calendars: Day date watches display both the date and day of the week. Full calendar watches display the date, day of the week, and month.
· Chronograph watches: Chronograph watches act as a stopwatch and use a meter to measure elapsed time. Chronographs can come in split seconds format to measure two time segments simultaneously or consecutively.
· Water resistant watches: This feature is usually described on the dial or back of the case. A watch's water resistance is measured in feet, metres, or atmospheres (ATM). Watches that are water resistant up to 30 metres are splash-proof. Water resistant watches up to 50 metres can be worn in the shower. If you want to go swimming with a watch on then look for watches that have a water resistance rating of 100 metres. A water resistance rating of 200 metres indicates that the watch can be worn scuba diving.
· Watches with moonphase indicators: Watches that have moonphase indicators have a display that indicates the phase of the moon with an image on a rotating disk.
· Watches with tourbillons: Tourbillons, are small but very costly mechanisms, found in mechanical watches, that can help eliminate potential time errors.
· Watches with a tachymeter: Tachymeter scales measure average speed by calculating time and pre-measured distance. They are located around the rim of a watch dial and are used along with a chronograph.
· Watches with repeaters: Watches that have a repeater announce the time through a series of chimes when you press a button.
· Telemeter scale watches: Telemeter scales can measure the distance between a watch wearer and an object that generates a visible signal or a loud noise (such as an electrical storm or a fired cannon).
· World time watches: Watches with a world time feature indicate time in all time zones around the world. You can often choose the name of a major city in a certain time zone to see the time in that time zone.

Citizen Develops 18.5mm-diameter Movement for Atomic Watches

Citizen Watch Co Ltd developed a watch movement measuring 18.5mm in diameter and 3.42 in thickness, smaller than a one-yen coin (20mm in diameter) or a nickel (21.21mm) , for use in ladies watches.

The company calls it "the World's Smallest Eco-drive Atomic Watch Movement 'H010.'"

The volume of the movement is about 20% smaller than that of the existing products. The small movement enhances variations in watch design and allows downsizing of atomic watches. Initially, the H010 will be used in the "Exceed Ladies Collection," which will be released in mid Oct 2008.

The H010 has miniaturized parts and double-sided circuit boards. The diameter and thickness of the movement was downsized by reducing the size of the antenna as well, while maintaining the receiving sensitivity.

A calendar function was added to the downsized movement. This is the first time a ladies eco-drive watch has been equipped with this function, according to the company.

It has an antimagnetic property that complies with JIS1, which was believed to be difficult to attain in an atomic watch with a built-in antenna. The property is at a level resistant to a 4,800A/m DC field.

It is also equipped with a function to detect external impact and control the second and minute hands to prevent their displacement. In addition, it is capable of detecting locations of hands periodically to make necessary corrections, in case a deviation of the hands from the time counter inside the IC is confirmed.

The battery life is three years under power saving mode, if fully charged. The amount of charge is displayed so that the user can check how much remains.

Concept watches blur the line between dream and reality

de Grisogono; Harry Winston At Baselworld 2008, de Grisogono test marketed its Meccanico dG, above, without a working prototype. If it works, it will be the first all- mechanical watch with an integrated digital display.

When the Opus 3 by Vianney Halter and Harry Winston was unveiled at Baselworld in 2003, it was hailed as a design revolution, described by the international watch industry magazine Europa Star as the "most astonishing watch of the year."

The mechanical watch had a jumping digital display - in which the numbers jump, rather than slide, into view - with the date, hour, and minute numerals appearing in six small display windows arranged in two rows - the hour and minute digits showing horizontally in the four corner windows with the date read vertically down the central column. Vianney had also made a totally new and unique crown with four adjustment positions - for winding, for adjusting the minutes, for the hours and for the date.

Collectors rushed to put their names down for one of the 55 limited-edition pieces and the watch went on to win the Geneva Grand Prix for technical achievement.

There was only one problem: the watch did not work.

"Vianney Halter, who was in charge of the project, underestimated the complexity of the development," said Maximilian Büsser, the founder of MB&F, who was managing director of the timepieces unit of Harry Winston between 1998 and 2005. "He clearly thought it was going to work and therefore so did we. Up to the last minute before unveiling it in Basel, we would never have imagined the watch would not be delivered over the following twelve months."

Next March, at long last, after nearly $1 million of additional development spending and after going though another two watchmaking teams, a working Opus 3 will finally be presented at Baselworld 2009.

"We have something working now that we developed with the Cellule des Spécialités Horlogères of AP-Renaud et Papi," said David Gouten, vice president in charge of international watch and jewelry sales at Harry Winston, referring to Renaud et Papi, the advanced movement design and fabrication unit of Audemars Piguet. "We've been fighting to bring this watch out for the last five years."

Despite the extra development cost, Harry Winston has decided not to increase the watch's original price. "I guess that's the price you have to pay for what, for all that, Opus 3 gave us in terms of credibility and innovation," Gouten said. The Opus 3 will retail between 85,000 Swiss francs, or about $70,000, and 135,000 francs.

Surprising collectors year after year has become a must in the watchmaking world and watch manufacturers have been increasingly hyping their products, competing to be first to unveil the next big idea. In a recent article in the specialist magazine Revolution, the journalist Declan Quinn complained that brands were trying to generate a tidal wave of publicity and press coverage for watches that, in reality, do not exist - or exist only as three-dimensional computer images and mock-up prototypes.

"The reason why brands are usually willing to present concept watches is because they get an enormous amount of publicity in the press," Büsser agreed.

The downside of the presentation of fantasy concepts is that they can get in the way of real development, said Jérôme Lambert, chief executive of Jaeger-LeCoultre. "This has had a very bad effect on the market," he said. "We have had to abandon at least three or four projects over the last two years because people presented ideas without realization.

"They were 3-D presentations and I didn't see the real watch, but we couldn't pursue what we were working on because we felt we wouldn't have been original anymore."

Most so-called concept watches eventually see the light of day. But, as in the case of Opus 3, it can take years before they are delivered.

Some collectors appear relaxed about having to wait. Bernard Cheong, a Singaporean watch collector who was one of the first to order the Opus 3, said that he did not mind the delay.

"I've also been waiting for another very complex watch, by Volker, since 2004," he said, referring to the independent watchmaker Volker Vyskocil.

Still, others are frustrated by what they see as an increasingly hyped market.

"They tell you how it's going to work, they show you a video, but they won't let you touch or feel the watch," said Ng Tjeng Jaw, another Singaporean collector. "It's very frustrating. You should have a working prototype when you're launching and you should be able to deliver the watch to the customers within two years."

In recent years, several other concept watches have been unveiled that have yet to materialize. These include the Monaco V4 by TAG Heuer, introduced in 2004, and the Mémoire 1 by Maurice Lacroix, first presented in 2007.

The Monaco V4 abandoned classic watchmaking technology, replacing the conventional gear wheels and pinions with drive belts and ball bearings; but transmission problems have taken time to fix.

Mémoire 1 - with only two hands, one for minutes and one for seconds, and a disk to indicate the hours - will be the first mechanical watch with a memory function, a completely new "grande complication."

At the press of a button integrated into the crown, the watch will change from time-telling to chronometer mode. When the button is pressed again, the hands will return to time-telling mode, showing the correct time thanks to a mechanical memory.

"It is a monumental process which will take years to fulfill," Sandro Reginelli, product director at Maurice Lacroix, said. "At the moment, we have proven functionality for the complications taken separately. Now we are focusing on making it work as a whole."

"Though we've been working very fast, we're not able to tell at this time when the watch will finally be delivered," Reginelli said. "We need some more time to ensure the final adjustments and respect the quality standards we have set ourselves. With this mechanical movement the claim 'grande complication' is maybe an understatement regarding the technical and mechanical complexity."

At the Basel fair this year, de Grisogono presented its Meccanico dG without a working prototype and Zenith did the same with its Zero-G Tourbillon.

The Meccanico dG is the first all-mechanical watch with an integrated digital display, while the Zero-G has a gyroscope cage tourbillon with an escapement mounted on cardan joints - a type of flexible driveshaft coupling - rather like marine chronometers.

The escapement, which is sensitive to changes of position, is thus kept constantly horizontal, ensuring optimal functioning of the spiral balance-wheel, critical to maintaining accuracy.

Watch manufacturers give several different reasons for presenting their future offerings to the collecting public before having a working prototype.

In the case of the Zero-G, "the only working prototype we had was at the manufacture to be improved," said Raphaël Bertschy, head of product development at Zenith: "So we decided to present a non-working sample instead of presenting an imperfect watch."

The first Zero-G will be delivered by the end of this year, he said.

At de Grisogono, other considerations applied. "In our case, it's purely for production reasons," said Fawaz Gruosi, the president and founder of the company. "We like to see the response in order to determine how to proceed in production."

How to get the best diamond prices

Diamonds are comprised of unmodified carbon, and they are the hardest objects known to man. They are formed due to extremely high temperatures and high pressure far beneath the surface of the earth’s crust. Volcanic eruptions bring these one to three billion year old gems to the surface, where they are mined from rivers by means of dredging and sifting. Only one carat of usable diamond is found for every 250 tons of earth processed. Only 20% of diamonds found are even worthy of being used for jewelry. This is why diamonds are very expensive. They are rare and precious gems of incomparable beauty.

Diamonds are a symbol of love because of their indestructible composition. Since diamonds last forever, the commitment of love associated with marriage makes them the perfect token of devotion and adoration. A diamond ring is a sign of commitment to the person you intend on spending the rest of your life with, so choosing a diamond is a momentous occasion. Knowing what to look for in a diamond is beneficial when making this important decision.

Diamonds are graded according to cut, color, and clarity. They are graded by diamond grading laboratories that use a special scale to determine these attributes. The most recognized independent diamond grading labs are The European Gemological Laboratory, The International Gemmological Institute, and The Gemological Institute of America. You will often see the initials of these leading laboratories on diamond appraisals.

Diamonds are graded on color from “D” to “Z”. You will pay a premium price for colorless diamonds in the D, E, and F range. Brilliantly colored diamonds are the most expensive of all because they are quite rare. The most common diamond color is yellow or cognac. There are also varying shades of champagne. Blue and red diamonds exist, but are even rarer.

The clarity of a diamond is determined by flaws and inclusions within the diamond and how easy they are to see. Flawless, internally flawless, and diamonds listed under VVS and VS on the clarity chart are higher in price. Near colorless diamonds that are considered “SI” (slightly included) are the best value.

The cut of a diamond will also determine the cost. You will pay more for an “ideal cut” diamond. Diamonds considered slightly less than ideal will cost less but still offer a brilliant look.

Diamond jewelry having a serial number engraved on the side for security purposes will cost you more. If you’re on a budget, this option may be one you can do without.

Avoid mall stores when shopping for your diamond jewelry. These stores typically have higher overhead costs. Shop for your diamond jewelry in stores that offer diamond guarantees that are free of charge. Should you lose or break a diamond under normal conditions, they will repair or replace the diamond at no cost to you. Most jewelers offer this service, but most are not free.

Avoid jewelry stores that have set prices on diamonds. They guarantee low prices, but they’re not necessarily the lowest. Keep in mind, there is a HUGE mark-up on most diamond merchandise. Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower price on a diamond. Some jewelry stores will accept a lower price if you’re paying with cash rather than putting the item on layaway or paying with a credit card. Asking if the item is the best possible price could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Use these tips and suggestions to get the diamond jewelry you want at a price you can afford. Keep in mind that love is priceless, and you shouldn’t have to pay a fortune to get the diamond jewelry you desire.

Watches Buying Guide-Consider Watch Materials

Determine what kind of band you want when selecting a wristwatch. There are a variety of popular styles available:
· Precious metal wristwatches: Wristwatches made of precious metals have a classic look. You can select either gold watches, sterling silver watches, or platinum watches to match whichever type of jewellery you wear. There are fancier wristwatches that even have diamond accents.
· Stainless steel wristwatches: Stainless steel, is a durable metal, commonly used for watch cases and bands.
· Aluminum wristwatches: Durable aluminum wristwatches will resist rust, tarnish, and corrosion.
· Carbon fibre wristwatches: Tough carbon fibre wristwatches have a dark colour (dark grey or black). The material is used on watch casing and dials.
· Titanium wristwatches: Sports watches often require a sturdy material like titanium which is a strong, white metal. Titanium wristwatches are 30% stronger than steel, fairly lightweight, and resist corrosion. You'll also typically find that they have a protective coating to make them scratch resistant.
· Plastic/rubber wristwatches: Some sports watches and fashion watches are made of rubber or plastic, both of which make lightweight, and sturdy bands.
If you find a watch with a face that you love, but with a leather band or rubber band that you don't like, consider buying a replacement watch band to better customise the watch to suit your taste.

Watches Buying Guide-Maintain Your Watch

There are a few steps you can follow to make sure your watches live long and prosper lives.

· Watch the temperature: Do not leave your watch in extreme cold or hot temperatures.
· Stay away from magnets: Do not expose quartz watches to magnets.
· Clean your watch: Regularly clean your watch to remove sweat, dirt, and oil. Wipe the crystal, case, and band with a soft cloth. Clean metal bands with soap, water, and a soft brush if needed. Although leather bands benefit from skin oil, you'll still want to remove excess dirt.
· Take your mechanical watch to the pros: Take your mechanical watch to have its gears cleaned by a professional. Gears should be regularly maintained every three to five years.

what to look for when buying a yacht

Buying a yacht can be relatively painless if you are well prepared. There are several things to consider when purchasing a yacht.

Finding a reputable builder or company is the most important aspect of buying a yacht. Look for a builder that has experience. A new company can do an excellent job, but it is up to you to decide if you want to go with experience or potential. Ask for a consultation. There is usually no fee and any builder worth its salt will be happy to provide you with all the information you desire. Also ask for a list of previous clients. Speaking directly with their customers can be an invaluable tool in deciding which company to go with. If this is not possible, go with your gut instincts. Nine times out of ten, they are right.

Get a second opinion. If you disagreed with a doctor about a health issue, you’d ask another doctor, right? Same applies here. Although, word of mouth is arguably the best way to find assistance with any search, don’t make a decision solely on someone else’s experience. What’s right for them may not be right for you.

Yachts fall into two categories; sailing yachts and motor yachts. A sailing yacht is generally less expensive, but has all of the style and class as that of a motor yacht. While motor yachts can be a bit pricey, they pack a lot of bang for the buck. You can also opt for the sailing/motor yacht combo. Most builders offer a number of models, usually four or five, that they always carry in their catalog. These yachts come with standard features such as a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. They can be customized and are an excellent choice for those on a budget.

If you happen to be a big spender and money is no object, then a mega yacht may be your cup of tea. These vessels are not for the faint of heart! They are massive, usually 200’+ and carry a hefty price tag, but can rival any five star hotel for comfort, convenience and class. You are limited only by your creativity and your bank account.

Review:
1. Research. Finding a reputable builder can seem like a daunting task, but it is well worth the effort. Doing so will save you valuable time and money.
A. Experience or potential. It’s your call, but whatever your decision, be well informed.
B. Don’t be afraid to ask for a consultation. Remember, they want your business.
2. Ask around, but get a second opinion. This is a huge investment and you can’t afford to play the guessing game.
3. Know what your budget is and stick to it. You can avoid plenty of heartaches and headaches by setting your spending limit.
4. Know what you want! There can be nothing more frustrating than finding the perfect builder then having to deal with delays because you don’t know what it is that you truly want.
5. Last, but not least, have fun! Chances are, if you’re buying a yacht, you’re at a pretty good place in your life. So, relax and enjoy.

Accutron Dates, how to tell the age of a Bulova Watch

Accutron is a very beautiful and special watch.
By far, just like most people, I am not an expert on Bulova Accutron, so I hope this helps.

Dating Accutron is simple and it works for both regular Accutron, Spaceview, 218 Accutron and some other watches as well.

Each watch has a serial number and underneath a 2 digit age marker made up of one letter and one number...Here goes:

A9 = 1949 (this was the first dating done)L0-L9 - 1950's, L0 = 1950, L1 = 1951..... L9 = 1959M0-M9 - 1960's, M0 = 1960, M1 = 1961....etc... toM6 = 1966, etc.N0-N9 - 1970's. N3 = 1973, etc.

Thank you for your time and please don't forget to rate me!

Watch Care: Tips for Keeping Your Timepiece Timeless

This guide provides you with some simple tips on how to keep your timepiece in immaculate condition.

Temperature Care

Avoid temperature extremes. Exposing your watch to high temperatures, such as placing it on a dashboard of a vehicle, or use in a hot tub, may cause the watch to malfunction, shorten battery life or damage certain components. Leaving the watch in extreme cold temperatures may cause irregular timekeeping until the watch returns to normal operating temperature.

Watch Cleaning

For maximum performance, you should wipe your watch with a clean soft cloth, regularly. Stains, water spots and accumulated dirt on the case, crystal and bank that are not removed may cause premature wear. If you use your watch in the shower, or in chlorinated or salt water, you should rinse it with fresh water and thoroughly dry it afterwards.

Care for Metal Bracelets

To extend the life and maintain the good appearance of a metal watch bracelet, the following are recommended:
• Be aware that since the watch and bracelet is worn next to the skin, it collects dust and perspiration and becomes soiled if not cleaned regularly. This is particularly true of the inner parts of the links or mesh of the bracelet.
• Soil and rust, when present in a bracelet, are dissolved by perspiration and can cause staining of cuffs and irritation of the skin in some instances.
• Heavy perspiration should be wiped off the watch and bracelet with a soft dry cloth. The bracelet should be cleaned occasionally by using a soft brush and warm soapy water after which the soap is thoroughly rinsed with clear water and the bracelet dried completely. The foregoing manner of cleaning should not be done if the watch is not water-resistant but should instead be done by your jeweler.

Care for Straps
Leather:
• Heavy perspiration, if not removed from a leather strap, can wash out the natural oils and cause the leather to become dry and deteriorate. Any moisture should be blotted with a soft cloth or paper towel and the strap allowed to dry naturally.
• Salt residue and soil can be removed from the leather by cleaning with a dampened soft cloth and mild soap or saddle soap.
• Occasionally, the inside surface of the strap should be cleaned by using a soft cloth dampened with alcohol.
• The strap should always be worn a little loosely (one finger space between wrist and strap) to allow air to circulate thus allowing any moisture to evaporate.

Rubber:
• Rubber straps should be washed frequently with mild soap and warm water using a soft brush.
• Thorough cleaning, using the same method, should especially be done after use in salt water.
• Solvents, oils, perspiration, tanning lotion and salt can cause rubber to deteriorate if not removed

Hope this information was helpful.

How do I avoid mis-identifying a real watch as a fake?

Fine watch makers such as Rolex, Omega , IWC, Breitling, Cartier and others have made thousands of models over the past century. Many older models look similar enough to current or other models that their differences can be mistaken as signs of a fake. Similarly, manufacturers sometimes made some unusual or custom versions for specific International markets that would be unknown or seem odd even to people experienced with that brand of watch in their part of the world.

So how do you tell when a watch is really a real one? The number one test is to find the manufacturer's serial number. On modern Omega watches, the 8-digit serial number is laser etched on the outside of the watch--usually on the back of one of the lugs, or on the back of the case. On older Omega watches, the number is still 8 digits, but almost always inside the watch, engraved into the movement. Rolex watches normally have their model and serial numbers on the ouside side of the case, between the lugs where the bracelet or strap attach.

The presence of a correctly engraved or laser etched serial number is often enough to confirm the watch is real--except for fake Rolex watches that often do bear fake serial numbers. The next step is to have the manufacturer validate the serial number. It is best if you can also include a photo of the watch with your request. They will respond with the technical details that you can use to confirm that the serial number does indeed belong to that watch.

Even if the watch is genuine, having a manufacturer's representative check the serial number and view the watch or a photo of it can also identify if the watch has been altered. Especially on older watches, they may have had their dials repainted (sometime to completely different color combinations) or had exterior replacement parts (especially crowns and bracelets) that were not original to that specific model.

Some things you may not know about Automatic watches

Firstly, why is Switzerland considered to be the best country of manufacture? Switzerland is considered the pioneer nation for quality watches, and its industry is renowned internationally as having superlative expertise in watchmaking. Most luxury watches are logically made in Switzerland. German movements are however also highly regarded.

What are the popular Automatic movements? For 3-hand movements (these are hours, minutes, and seconds) Ronda is a typical choice, for Chronographs (watches with extra timing functions) the ETA Valjoux 7750 is ubiquitous and for good reason, today these movements have 25 Jewels. Jewels are bearings used to increase the accuracy of operation. Originally actual Jewels, they are now usually synthetic.

Other Automatic variations include Tourbillion, this works against the effects of gravity to increase the accuracy of the movement. The regulating mechanism is housed in its own rotating cage. A Complication movement is one that has a literally complicated array of functionality typically displaying extra time measurements (such as day, month, year, leap year, moonphase). The term ‘Chronometer’ means that the watch has a movement which is certified as highly accurate by the ‘C.O.S.C’ - Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. This term is often misued to mean ‘Chronograph’ or a marketing term for a movement which is actually not certfied at all. Rolex were originally famed for making precision timepieces, now most of their watches are officially certified (the C.O.S.C’s most frequent customer!), and known as ‘Superlative Chronometers’.

Finally, what is the best watch? The best watch is the one that makes you feel good about yourself.

Swatch Watch Battery Chart

Most SWATCH Wrist Watches have batteries that can easily be changed by the average person. In fact, that's how they were designed! Here is a general guide to selecting the correct Battery for your SWATCH. Don't worry too much about letters in front of battery numbers. They used to matter more, but most companies have gone to "multi-drain" batteries and it no longer matters as much.

There are two ways to locate your battery number: The back cover of your watch or the battery itself. I have a table below to help you.

Installation: As an extra service, I include a FREE illustrated and written guide to battery installation for Swatch as well as virtually ALL types of watches when you purchase your new ENERGIZER batteries from my store, Watchinghour

Lastly, be sure to recycle your old Watch Batteries and dispose of properly.
