The beginning of the Omega story goes back to 1848 when Louis Brandt started developing pocket watches in his workshop at La Chaux-de-Fonds. Then in 1877 Brandt forms Louis Brandt & Fils company with Louis Paul his eldest son. In 1880 Louis Paul and his brother Caeser move the company to Bienne, where it remains today. The Brandts were one of the first swiss watch makers to utilize the divided assembly line which bought down the price of watches greatly with the improved quality and efficiency to be gainned from mass production. 1891 the company became Louis Brandt & Frere, then in 1903 it became Louis Brandt and Frere - Omega Watch Co, then Omega, Louis Brandt & Frere in 1947 and finally just Omega Ltd in 1982.
The first mass produced watch by Omega was in 1894, the Omega 19 line caliber (pocket watch). 1902 saw Omega introduce its first wrist watch. Since then Omega has been blessed with being in the right place at the right time, and of course developing consitantly high quality watches. The 1960's saw Omega grab the title of the first watch worn on the moon, the Omega speedmaster was worn by Neil Armstrong and all apollo crews.
1974 saw Omega launch its first high frequency (2.4 Mhz) quart wrist watch, the Mega Quartz 2400. This revolutionary watch, with precision 10 times greater than a normal quartz watch, also has the enviable title of being the first ever watch to be awarded a Marine Chronometers Certificate (the 1511 version).
