Some people have asked about the correct setting of a calendar watch - specifically in what positions the crown should be in and what position affects what parts of the watch.
I have taken some pictures of a Rolex Oyster Perpetual that shows the positions of the crown and aslo a short description of what effect a movement of the crown has on what settings. At first you have to remember which setting of the crown does what, but after a while it all falls into a logical progression.
I have mentioned that turning the crown anticlockwise in position 2 when the hour hand is close to the 12 o'clock position can be dangerous.
This is really when the calendar watch hour hand is approaching midnight and the date mechanism has begun to move the date on to the next day. The effect is different for various watches,such as Porsche Design replica and Richard Mille replica.for example the Rolex Oyster is less prone to damage because the date only changes when the hour hand is just past midnight and even if you watch closely, its hard to see the change such is the speed of the superb Rolex mechanism.
On other watches, my Breitling Chronomat is a good example, the date starts to change about 2 hours before midnight. So during this time period I would not turn the watch crown backwards.

Position 1. In the Rolex Oyster Perpetual shown here the crown is in the fully screwed down position. In this position the crown has sealed the watch case against water and dust ingress, and the watch is worn with the crown in this position.

Position 2. In this position the watch can be manually wound if necessary (this is an automatic watch). The winding is carried out by rotating the crown in a clockwise direction.

Position 3. By pulling out the crown a 'click' will be felt and heard. In this position the day/date can be altered. It is important to turn the crown slowly as the date will change rapidly. Turn the crown anticlockwise until the date shows one day less than what is required. In order to get the correct date, move the crown out to position 4 and turn the crown anticlockwise. This avoids the watch being 12 hours out. On watches with a day complication turn the crown anticlockwise to change the day and clockwise for the date.

Position 4. By pulling the crown out a further click will be heard and felt. In this position the second hand will stop. Hands can now be set to the correct time by turning the crown in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. Never turn the crown anticlockwise while the hour hand is between the 9 or 3 o'clock (clockwise) position. Doing so may damage the internals of the watch day/date mechanism.
Remember - Never wind hands anticlockwise between 9 and 3!

The Rolex Oyster date function changes at just past midnight. It happens so quickly, in less than 1/2 a second, that I couldn't capture the date moving at all on camera.
The Breitling Chronomat starts its date change at about 10.45PM, plenty of time to capture the first move of the date mechanism.

Can I get my watch wet?
How wet you can get your watch depends on how wet the watch was designed to get! As a general rule, a WR30m watch is designed to be splashed, a WR50m is OK for light swimming but not really prolonged immersion, a WR100m watch is fine for swimming and a WR200m can be considered a diver's watch as such. These are the basics. More importantly is where you get your watch wet...try to avoid dunking even a depth rated watch in hot water, like in the bath or shower; the heat can distort seals and soapy detergents can damage them. The chlorine in swimming pools isn't the greatest friend to watch seals either; it's best to thoroughly rinse off your watch in fresh water after swimming in a pool. Likewise after swimming in the sea, used fresh water to rinse out all that salt!
What about heat and sunlight?
Heat in the form of saunas etc. isn't really recommended, particularly if you take a sauna and then enter the icy waters of the plunge pool! Quite simply, rapid hot to cold like that means that something may contract rather rapidly, if that something relies on a seal which has softened due to the heat then you are asking for trouble. Also, any watch will have some moisture in it simply because it has air in it; rapid cooling means this may condense, probably only to disappear again but it could leave a stain under the crystal or worse.
Heat in terms of wearing the watch in hot weather maybe can't be avoided, fair enough and as this is fairly constant compared to the above then shouldn't be too much of a problem. However, if at all possible, avoid leaving/wearing the watch in direct strong sunlight; firstly the watch is going to get very hot which won't do the lubricants much good; secondly, direct sunlight like that can prematurely age dials and cause dial lacquers to lift or micro bubble. This isn't to say that your watch should be kept under shirt sleeves whenever the sun is out! It's just a case of using common sense; don't fry your watch!

Before You Begin
Before you start fashioning a unique clock for your house, consider these design factors first.
Choosing a Clock FaceWhen it comes to picking out a clock face, may people get stuck in a circular rut. But clock faces don’t necessarily have to be circular, nor do they have to be boring! With a clock kit (available at craft stores or online) and a few simple tools, you can make a clock out of practically anything. Here are some great materials to use for your clock face:

You can even make cool clocks out of such strange materials as lunchboxes, purses, or cereal boxes!

Making a Tray Clock
Teatime anyone? You can make a fantastic wall clock out of a simple metal tea or serving tray. All it takes is a few tools and materials.
Materials:You will need:
a clock kit (containing a mechanism, hands, and a battery)
a metal serving tray (any shape or size)
paint, stain, or markers to decorate the tray
a set of stick-on numbers or other markings for the hours
a drill and a set of drill bits
a hammer and nail
a metal file
pliers
safety googles
How To Make The Clock:
Once you’ve found the tray that you want to use, add any decorative flourishes you would like, using paint or markers.
Mark the place where you want the clock face to go. (This doesn’t have to be in the center of the tray).
Using the nail and hammer, make a slight dimple where the clock movement will be placed.
Using your drill and a cobalt drill bit, drill a hole through the tray. The drill bit should be the same size as the stem on the clock mechanism. Be sure to wear your safety goggles.
Using the file, sand down the edges of the hole.
Pass the stem of the clock mechanism through the hole. Add the hanging clip and rubber washer to the back of the clock.
Place the brass washer and nut on to the front of the clock. Tighten with a pair of pliers.
Place the hour hand on top of the nut. Follow with the minute hand and the small brass nut found in your clock kit.
Place the second hand on top of this nut and cover it with the cap provided in the clock kit.
Attach your numbers every 30 degrees around the clock face.
Rotary Phone Clock
This decorative table clock will add a sense of humor and whimsy to any room. And, its easy to make!
Materials:You will need:
one rotary phone (that you don’t want to use for calls anymore!)
flathead screwdriver
one paperclip
one piece of foam board
craft knife
clock kit
glue that dries clear
How To Make the Clock:
Using your flathead screwdriver, remove the screws in your rotary phone. This will allow you to separate the plastic casing, receiver, finger hook, and number plate from the base of the phone.
Find the hole located on the fingerplate between the numbers 0 and 9. Rotate the fingerplate clockwise as far as it can go and insert the open end of your paperclip into the hole.
Pressing the paperclip down, continue to rotate the fingerplate until it stops. Remove the paperclip and lift off the fingerplate.
Using your screwdriver, remove the metal ring in the center of the number plate.
Remove the number card from the phone. Trace this onto your foam board and cut the circle out.
Glue the piece of foam to the original number card and place them back into the number plate.
Cut a small hole in the center of the foam. This is where the clock movement will sit.
Assemble your clock movement and attach to the back of the foam. Align the movement hands and slip them through the small hole, so that they are sitting on the front of the foam.
Attach foam to number plate.
Apply glue around the edge of the hole in the phones casing.
Turn right side up and press the number plate into position on the receiver.
Allow to dry for at least 20 minutes.
Place the plastic casing over the base of the phone and screw back into place.
Gently cover movement with fingerplate.

In these days of “fast” and “convenient” I decided to commence a work of “painstaking” and “craftsmanship”, making my own wristwatch,you can make your own watches with the same looks of Rolex replica,Porsche Design replica,Richard Mille replica,Zenith replica,Hublot replica and Ferrari replica watches. I have had the idea for a certain arrangement of the watch dial, as on the image at the right, for a while now. My investigations into available movements showed that no production movement would give me this layout. After a long period of indecision and wondering what I was really getting myself into I decided to make my own movement, followed by the case and dial.

That is a big jump, but we engineers are used to creating things that didn’t exist before so it was mostly the craftsmanship portion of the work that worried me. Am I able to do this watchmakers work, work at such a small scale? To put the chances on my side I decided to do two things: 1) take the watchmaking correspondence course of the BHI, which gave me a lot of the basic skills, but which I have to admit I haven’t even finished the first of three years, and 2) make a complete CAD model of the movement and watch before starting.

My first attempt at making a movement was to make one with all the pinions in a straight line. A simplified movement with the largest possible expansion, to be able to see and work on everything as easily as possible. Even so that first attempt at a movement was not crowned with success. But one learns fastest through failure and the attempt to fathom why, despite ones best efforts, things did not go right. And learn I did.

The following are posts I made to an Internet watchmaking forum describing the advancement of my work during the course of almost a year. From a few square pieces of cold brass to a working movement in a one-of-a-kind case. One of the joys of this work was the constant changes in skillset needed. From machinist to watchmaker to silversmith, etc.. As such the work is never boring, never repetitive, always new challenges and unknowns to be overcome.

The articles below describe the work to make this watch in approximately chronological order starting with cutting the first pieces of brass. At that time I had already spent about 6 months making a complete 3D CAD model of the movement and case along with production drawings of each piece I was going to make. Without such complete preparation such a project is doomed to failure from the beginning. And in spite this preparation, there was still enough that got changed underway or that I discovered that I had forgotten.

Companies are working on ways to increase the length of time battery-less watches will run without being moved. Seiko has just introduced a Kinetic movement called the 1M which it claims will run for three months.
9. Can the wearer tell how long the watch will run once it is taken off?
Yes. Battery-less watches have a power reserve indicator that shows how long the watch will run once it is removed.
The mechanisms vary from brand to brand and model to model. In Seiko Kinetic models, the wearer pushes a button and the seconds hand moves to indicate how much power is left. The hand will move through a 30-second arc if it is fully charged. If it moves less than the full 180 degrees, the watch is only partially charged.
Some watches also have a warning system to alert the wearer that the power is running low. In Seiko Kinetic models, for example, the seconds hand moves in a jerking motion at two-second intervals to indicate that the watch has only a few hours' worth of power remaining.
10. How can the wearer get the watch running again if it runs out of power while it's not being worn?
You can start a battery-less watch by moving it vigorously. This action gets the rotor spinning, generating electrical energy. Once you've done so, the ordinary motion of your arm will be enough to keep the watch working. Manufacturers have also deviced other ways to start the movement once it has run out of power. The Omega-matic, for example, can be repowered by winding the crown, which generates electricity.
11. Will battery-less watches make battery-powered watches obsolete?
That a tough question, and opinions within the watch industry are clearly mixed. Seiko is putting enormous emphasis on its Kinetic technology; placing it at the center of its marketing campaign. SMH, which actively promoting its battery-less watches, is making less of a fuss about them than is Seiko.
Proponents of battery-less watches cite Seiko's success with Kinetic as a reason to expect battery-less watch to one day eclipse battery-powered ones. Switzerland has been officially testing chronometers since 1878. COSC as it exists today was founded in 1973.
4. What tests are run on the watch?
COSC conducts elaborate precision tests on the movements using cameras and computers, which analyze the data. COSC performs seven different tests. Failure to meet the minimum standard in any one of the tests means that a movement is rejected. The tests are complicated. Here is an attempt at a simple summary:
Test 1: Mean Daily Rate: After 10 days of tests, the mean daily rate of the movement must be within the range of -4 to +6 seconds per day. COSC determines the mean daily rate by subtracting the time indicated by the movement 24 hours earlier from the time indicated on the day of observation.
Test 2: Mean Variation in Rates: COSC observes the movement's rate in five different positions (two horizontal, three vertical) each day over 10 days for a total of 50 rates. The mean variation in rates can be no more than 2 seconds.
Test 3: Greatest Variation in Rates: The greatest of the five variations in rates in the five positions can be no more than 5 seconds per day.
Test 4: Horizontal and Vertical Difference: COSC subtracts the average of the rates in the vertical position (on the first and second days) from the average of the rates in the horizontal position (on the ninth and tenth days). The difference must be no more than -6 to +8 seconds.
Test 5: Greatest Deviation in Rates: The difference between the greatest daily rate and the mean daily test rate can be no more than 10 seconds per day.
Test 6: Rate Variation Due to Temperature: COSC tests the movement's rate at 8 degrees Celsius (46 degrees Fahrenheit) and at 38 degrees C (100 degrees F). It subtracts the cold temperature rate from the hot temperature rate and divides by 30. The variation must be no more than 0.6 seconds per day.
Test 7: Resumption of the rate: This is obtained by subtracting the average mean daily rate of the first two days of testing from the mean daily rate of the last test day. The resumption of rate can be no more than 5 seconds. Simple, isn't it? If a movement meets the standards, COSC issues a certificate designating it as a "chronometer."
5. How many movements does COSC test each year and how many certificates are issued?
In 1995, COSC tested 844,043 movements. That was down slightly (-4.5%) from 1994 when a record 883,714 movements were submitted for testing. The vast majority of the movements sent in for testing pass. In 1995, COSC issued 814,868 certificates, 96.5% of those submitted. That means chronometers represent about 2% of Switzerland's total production of complete watches.
6. Why are most chronometers mechanical watches?
Just one-third of 1% of the movements submitted for testing in 1995 (3,026 total) were quartz movements. That's because electronic quartz technology is by definition an ultra-precise form of timekeeping and there is less need to demonstrate a quartz watch's accuracy. That's not the case with mechanical watches. Even so, COSC has developed stringent regulations which quartz watches must pass before they can be called chronometers. Worth noting: by far the leader in Swiss quartz chronometers in 1995 with two-thirds of the total certificates issued was Krieger Watch Corp. of Miami Beach, Fla.
7. Do many companies apply for chronometer certificates for their watches?
More than 60 firms submitted movements to COSC in 1995.
8. How is the demand for chronometers?
Despite the drop in requests in 1995, there has been a surge of watch company applications for chronometers in this decade. COSC data shows that the number of movements submitted bottomed out in 1976 at 225,712. Requests did not pass the 300,000 unit mark again until 1984. It rose steadily throughout the late 1980s but has soared in the 1990s, reflecting the strength of Rolex, in particular, and the general revival of Swiss mechanical watches on world markets. In 1990, the number of movements submitted to COSC passed the 600,000 unit mark for the first time. By 1994, the number had reached 883,714, an increase of 43.5% over 1990.
9. Which firm is the leader in production of Swiss chronometers?
Rolex is the undisputed chronometer king. An amazing 83% of all chronometer certificates issued by COSC in 1995 went to Rolex--more than 675,000 of them. You get some sense of Rolex's dominance when you realize that only five firms (one of them a group, really) produce more than 6,000 chronometers a year. The second largest producer of chronometers is TAG Heuer (51,638 certificates in 1995), followed by Omega (31,135 certificates), the Cartier Group (6,393) and Bulgari (6,056).

1.What is a watch crystal?
A watch crystal is a transparent cover that protects the watch face. Note that, coincidently, the word "crystal" is also used to denote the tiny piece of quartz that serves as an oscillator in a quartz watch. These two types of crystals have nothing to do with each other. The latter is usually called a "quartz crystal" to prevent confusion.
2. What are watch crystals made of?
They can be made of any of three materials: 1- plexiglass (a clear, lightweight type of plastic), 2- ordinary glass - like that used for windows, and usually referred to in the watch business as "mineral glass" or 3- synthetic sapphire (see question 4). Some crystals are made of both mineral and sapphire glass. Seiko, for example, makes some watches with crystals made of mineral glass covered with a layer of synthetic sapphire. 3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each material?
Plexiglass, as you would expect, is the least expensive. It is also the least likely to shatter and the most likely to become scratched. These materials are sometimes used to make simulated-stone surfaces for furniture or walls. The watch wearer should note that accidentally scraping a sapphire crystal against such a surface could cause a scratch.
5. Can you tell if a crystal is made of sapphire by looking at it?
No. Mineral glass and sapphire generally look the same. A surefire way to tell them apart (albeit an often impractical one) is with a scratch test, says Johann Jorgo, technical director at Baume & Mercier Inc. New York. A stainless steel knife or screwdriver will scratch a mineral-glass crystal but not a sapphire one.
6. Are Scratch-resistant crystals new?

7. Are all scratch-resistant crystals made of synthetic sapphire?

9. What are "anti-reflective" or "glare-resistant" crystals?
This type of crystal has been coated on one or both sides with a substance - the same one used on anti-reflective eyeglasses - that lessens reflections and glare and makes it easier to read the watch face. Anti-reflective crystals can be made of either mineral glass or synthetic sapphire. One interesting feature of these crystals is that, viewed from the front, they are virtually invisible because they aren't reflecting any light. Rust Repair

I have recently been working on a 1963 Buick Skylark at my street rod and restoration shop Waycool Customs. There are a lot of rusted panels on this car and no replacement body panels can be purchased. Every panel must be hand fabricated. We have made new floor pans, rockers, trunk pans, and under the rear seat.
What I really want to touch on is when pinch-welds rust on a car.
Every car has pinch-welds on them. Moisture gets in between the two pieces of steel and begins to rust. Over the years the rust will build up and begin to swell the two pieces of steel. This is often overlooked and can cause serious problems down the road. You have to cut the pinch weld apart and scrape the rust out. I always use a rust converter to coat the inside of the pinch weld. I use POR-15. Once the rust is treated hammer and dolly the pinch-weld together and re-spotweld it. It is good as new now.
Check the car over and if you see any signs of pinch-welds swollen you have to repair it. If you put nice paint over top of it the rust will keep swelling the weld and eventually break it open. It will also bleed out rust when you wash the car. I always go on the inside of the doors and coat them with POR-15 to seal the pinch-weld up so now moisture can get in there. As with that anywhere you can get to it is a good idea to coat the inside of the panel to ensure that no rust will come back soon. Nobody wants that to happen!

EDWARD HOWARD was a veteran watch and clockmaker of Boston. He was born in Hingham, Mass., Oct. 6, 1813. He served an apprenticeship of seven years as a clockmaker. At the age of twenty-nine he embarked in the business of clockmaking on his own account, his partner being D. P. Davis, and the firm being known as Howard & Davis. The firm manufactured a very superior line of clocks and regulators, and their goods soon gained a world-wide reputation. In 1849 Mr. Howard, together with A. L. Dennison, Samuel Curtis, a Boston capitalist, and D. P. Davis organized a company for the manufacture of watches. This company was separate and distinct from that of Howard &Davis, and was known as the American Horologe Company. This company was the first in the world to undertake the manufacture of watches on the interchangeable system.

AARON L.DENNISON, The father of the American watch factories, was the first person to apply the interchangeable system to the manufacture of watches. This he did in 1850. He was the son of a shoemaker of Freeport, Me., and was born in the year 1812. He was apprenticed to James Carey, a watchmaker of Brunswick, Me., in 1830. In 1839 he was engaged in a general watch and jewelry business in Boston and also carried a line of watchmakers' tools and materials. He invented the Dennison Standard Gauge in 1840. In the fall of 1849 he began to build machinery for the manufacture of watches on the interchangeable system, having associated himself with Messrs Howard, Davis and Curtis. In 1850 he completed the model for the first watch which was 18 size, with two barrels, and was made to run eight days. The watch, however, was not a success, and it was replaced by a one day wind model.

The factory was situated directly opposite to the Howard & Davis shop. The name of the company was changed subsequently to the Warren Manufacturing Company honoring a hero of the Revolutionary War who came from Roxbury, Massachusetts., and later to the Boston Watch Company. In 1854 the location of the factory was changed to Waltham. In 1857 the company made an assignment, and the property, consisting of real estate, the factory, and numerous other buildings, machinery, steam engine, etc , was offered at public auction and was bid in for $56,500 by Royal E. Robbins, for himself and the firm of Tracy & Baker, case makers of Philadelphia, who were creditors of the defunct company. After the failure of the Boston Watch Company Mr. Howard returned to Roxbury and continued with his clock business in connection with Mr, Davis.

The Tracy and Baker Company didn’t last long. Baker soon sold out to James Appleton and the name was changed to the Appleton, Tracy and Company. C T. Parker and P. S. Bartlett, both company employees, were the names of most of the watches produced. On January 1, 1859, the company merged with the Waltham Improvement Company, to form the American Watch Company.

Then the Civil war broke out. Royal E. Robbins, the majority stock holder of the new company, said; "During that year, came the outburst of the Civil War which brought the business to a standstill and threatened to again bankrupt the enterprise. There was little hope of finding a market for the factory product, unless it should be so reduced in quantity as to be manufactured at a loss. It was therefore decided to reduce expenditures to the lowest point, but to keep the factory in operation to such an extent as to hold the leading personnel.''

In the first year in business,The American Watch Company manufactured the same watch as those manufactured by the Appleton, Tracy and Company. A. L. Dennison, while he was with the company, and prior to 1857, while he was with the Boston Watch Company, had experimented with and sold a few full plate 7 jewel models which were engraved Dennison, Howard and Davis, the same as the 18-size 15 jewel model which up to that time had been the sole product of the company. Robbins, when the company was known as Appleton Tracy and Company, had some minute changes made in this model in 1857, and tried to market it for $12.00 under the name of C. T. Parker. Only 399 of these 7 jewel models were produced as they did not go over well. In early 1861, the American Watch Company changed the name of this movement to J. Watson. The company dropped the name of J. Watson after the second run and renamed the model William Ellery, after one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. This watch became known as the "soldiers watch". In September, 1861 the company manufactured the first watch for women ever by machinery and interchangable parts. It was a 10-size 3/4 plate keywind and keyset. It was produced in two grades, a 13 jewel model engraved P.S Bartlett and a 15 jewel Appleton, Tracy and Company. Production of the 10 size movements ceased in 1873, but the company had manufactured enough movements, to assemble and offer them throughout the life of the American Watch Company. In the year 1885 the name changed to the American Waltham Watch Company. In 1905 the name was again changed to the Waltham Watch Company. The production of watches continued until 1953, having produced over 33,000,000 watch movements.

Spring-driven clocks were invented in Italy in the late 1400s. Using this technology, German locksmith Peter Henlein first made a portable watch during a period of asylum between 1504 and 1508. It could run for forty hours without rewinding. He created the first pocket watch in 1524.

Early pocket watches were cumbersome, box-shaped or drum-like contraptions, more suited to wearing around the neck than trying to squeeze into one's pocket. But watch-making soon spread through Europe and England. Henry VIII probably wore a watch on a chain around his neck.

They were not particularly accurate though. Large clocks kept better time, but neither clocks nor watches had minute hands until much later.
